Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary

DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.

American author Ambrose Bierce wrote The Devil's Dictionary over three decades as a series of installments for magazines and newspapers. I have been a huge fan of Bierce ever since I read An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge for an English class, and I thought it would be a fitting tribute to put a selection of definitions from The Devil's Dictionary online. I chose PHP to get some practice with server-side scripting, and edited the full list of definitions to remove some older and less interesting/relevant definitions.
